Michael D. Barnes, age 71, is a Senior Fellow at the Center for International Policy in Washington, D.C. He was previously Senior Counsel to the law firm of Covington & Burling LLP from 2007 through December 2010. He was president of The Brady Campaign and Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence from 2000 through 2006. He was previously a partner in the law firm of Hogan & Hartson LLP (now Hogan Lovells, LLP).
Mr. Barnes was United States Representative from Maryland's 8th Congressional District from 1979 to 1987. In January 2013, he was appointed to the Board of the Office of Congressional Ethics by Speaker John Boehner and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. He has previously served as a director of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, as a director of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and Chairman of the Washington Suburban Transit Commission, appointed by Governors of the State of Maryland.
Mr. Barnes has been a director of Washington Gas since 1991, a director of WGL Holdings, Inc. since November 2000 and serves as Chairman of the Governance Committee. As Chairman of the Governance Committee, Mr. Barnes also serves as lead director for the Board.
Mr. Barnes has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina and a Juris Doctor with Honors from George Washington University.
