Customer Advisory: Smart One Energy

Washington Gas

On August 2, the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) issued a ruling to suspend the license of SmartOne Energy (SmartOne), a third-party retail energy supplier, to operate as a natural gas retail supplier in Maryland, on the basis of unfair and deceptive marketing practices.  In the PSC’s action, a civil penalty of $561,000 was also imposed against Smart One.

Washington Gas is the PSC-regulated regional natural gas utility that serves customers throughout its Maryland service territory. We are alerting customers since a portion of our Maryland customers are served by SmartOne.

As part of the PSC ruling, SmartOne has been ordered to notify its customers by August 8, 2019 that, moving forward, customers may elect to receive natural gas supply from their local utility or choose to enroll with one of the other licensed natural gas suppliers in Maryland. There will be no disruption in gas service as a result of this change.

The PSC has pledged to address any potential customer refunds in a subsequent order.

Customers with complaints about retail energy suppliers are encouraged to contact the Commission’s Consumer Affairs Division at (410) 767-8028. Complaints can also be filed on the Commission’s web site, https://www.psc.state.md.us/online-complaints/.
