Programs and Solutions: Large Commercial

Whether you want to reduce operating costs, increase the reliability of your energy supply or upgrade the inefficient systems in your commercial facility—Washington Gas is here to help. Our team has the experience and technical expertise to walk you through each stage of the process. We will help you determine what investments will save the most energy and money. We’ll survey your structure or planned project, assess your energy needs and recommend natural gas solutions that will give you optimal performance.

  • Commercial property owners, builders and developers
  • Facilities operators for campuses, hospitals, schools, warehouses and industrial sites

  • Your facility will benefit from having safe, reliable, efficient natural gas.
  • You’ll be able to maintain operations during extreme weather with natural gas backup generator systems. Since gas stays on during power outages, a natural gas backup generator will ensure your facility has continuous power.
  • Natural gas is affordable and projected to remain that way for several decades.
  • Washington Gas offers a wide range of commercial rebates to help minimize equipment costs. These offers are detailed by jurisdiction.
  • High-efficiency natural gas appliances are better for the environment and energy usage.
  • Business customers who meet certain regulatory criteria as outlined in the Current Rates section may qualify for our interruptible natural gas price option. This pricing option allows Washington Gas to interrupt natural gas service to these customers during times of peak demand. In exchange for the ability to interrupt service, we provide customers a lower price.
  • Business customers may also change from interruptible to firm load if certain conditions have been met and if existing gas systems have been determined to be adequate. Doing so would guarantee gas service throughout the year, and you’ll no longer have to maintain backup fuel in order to deal with service interruptions.

Installation Process

  • Determine gas availability by contacting a Commercial Account Manager at Washington Gas.
  • Complete the Service Information Request form. This form details your load, delivery pressure and general service requirements. For new construction projects, please have a site plan, property plat and/or dimensional sketch, including meter location (preferably in autoCAD format or in PDF).
  • Customer submits required paperwork. Please ensure paperwork is complete and lists all anticipated gas equipment, the corresponding MBTu rating and required gas pressure.
  • Washington Gas will perform the required cost-benefit analysis of the project per the governing tariff in your jurisdiction (D.C., MD or VA).
  • Once the evaluation is complete, you will receive a Customer Commitment Letter (CCL) from Washington Gas.
  • Sign and return the CCL, along with required contribution, if any.
  • Washington Gas applies for all necessary permits and permissions.
  • A Washington Gas underground contractor will contact you to schedule the gas line installation.
  • Upon completion of the underground gas service, call your Washington Gas project manager or sales rep and request a gas meter.
  • The gas lines within the structure (houseline) must be inspected by the proper code authority of the jurisdiction. Your installer is responsible for tie-in.
