Washington Gas Announces Environment Challenge Winners

Back in March, we shared that Washington Gas was sponsoring the WUSA9 Environment Matters - Eco Challenge for middle school students that invited teachers to submit student environmental projects. Last week, we proudly presented four winning schools in the Washington metropolitan area with $5,000 checks to help make their eco-friendly projects a reality.

Capitol Hill Montessori at Logan (Washington) is working with the District Department of Transportation Urban Forestry Division and Forested to create an urban food forest on its campus.

G. James Gholson Middle School (Landover, Maryland) is working on slowing down the ramifications of global warming in the environment by developing an innovative way to save water.

Newport Mill Middle School (Kensington, Maryland) is partnering with IMPACT Silver Spring to create an outdoor green classroom space.

Manassas Park Middle School (Manassas Park, Virginia) is re-establishing an outdoor living classroom that couldn’t be utilized during COVID and introducing students to real-life situations within the environment.

In addition to the checks, the four winning schools will receive professional development and environmental education materials from our event partner, the Smithsonian Science Education Center. We are proud to be part of these young students’ innovative projects to benefit the future of our environment.

Congratulations to all of the outstanding teams!
