Washington Gas Named Top Environmental Champion

for Third Year in a Row in National Utility Industry Survey

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 21, 2020) – Washington Gas today announced it has been named an Environmental Champion for the third consecutive year based on a new 2020 Cogent Syndicated national survey of utility customers released by Escalent, a leading human behavior and analytics group.

The findings were published in Utility Trusted Brand & Customer Engagement™: Residential, which identified the top 31 utilities across the U.S. that have demonstrated a dedication to environmental stewardship in their business operations, energy programs and service to its customers.

The recognition of Washington Gas was based on a study of 69,620 customers who are served by 140 of the largest residential gas and electric utility providers and were asked to rate their utility company’s commitment to the environment. As with last two reports, the survey again scored an Environmental Dedication Index compiled from consumer ratings of five essential environmental attributes, including a commitment to environmentally friendly energy sources, providing tools and programs to help customers conserve energy, supporting environmental causes, encouraging green initiatives for buildings and vehicles, and protecting the environment.

“As we celebrate Earth Day, Washington Gas is proud to again earn a top spot for our commitment to environmental stewardship based on direct feedback from our customers – it reflects our dedication to conduct our own operations responsibly and serve our customers with a focus on protecting the environment,” said Blue Jenkins, President, Washington Gas. “We’re honored to receive industry recognition and will continue to drive robust initiatives that lower methane emissions and promote energy efficiency practices in support of a cleaner energy future.”

“As people become more attuned to the environmental impact of their energy use, Environmental Champion utilities like Washington Gas help them align their personal values with their energy decisions,” said Chris Oberle, Senior Vice President, Escalent. “For the increasing number of customers who have made a commitment to reduce their environmental footprint, it helps demonstrate what is possible."

Several Washington Gas accomplishments played a role in the high rating, such as:

Lower Emissions from Fleet and Facilities: Washington Gas has reduced emissions from its fleet and facilities 78 percent since 2008; in keeping with its commitment to have carbon neutral fleet and facilities by 2025. An analysis conducted by consulting firm WSP shows the actual Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions reductions from 2015 through 2018 on a trend line comfortably in the “well below 2 degrees” GHG emissions reductions range of 2.5 percent to 4.2 percent per year – as defined by the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi).

Pipeline Replacement to Enhance System: Accelerated pipeline replacement programs are designed and intended to ensure system integrity by replacing older infrastructure with new and modern materials, promoting safety and system reliability. As an ancillary benefit, they also reduce GHG emissions associated with natural gas throughout our operating territory. Between 2008 and 2017, Washington Gas’ pipeline replacement work resulted in a 24 percent reduction in emissions intensity per therm of gas delivered.

Customer Efficiency Programs: In March, Washington Gas earned its second 2020 ENERGY STAR® Award for Excellence in the category of ENERGY STAR Promotion. Washington Gas was honored for outstanding achievement by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) for raising the visibility of the ENERGY STAR program and increasing participation. Washington Gas has expanded promotions of ENERGY STAR-certified products and homes which helped bring the value of energy efficiency to a larger audience. Since 2015, Washington Gas has been an ENERGY STAR partner, and the company also earned the ENERGY STAR Award for Excellence in Promotion in 2018.

Washington Gas has been named as a Most Trusted Brand for three consecutive years, and a Customer Champion utility company by Escalent. Washington Gas, which today serves more than 1.2 million customers in the Washington, D.C. area, has delivered safe, reliable and affordable natural gas for more than 171 years.
