Washington Gas is replacing gas pipelines along Arlington Boulevard in Arlington, Va., as part of the Steps to Advance Virginia’s Energy (SAVE) Plan. The company’s SAVE Plan, an accelerated pipe replacement program approved by the Virginia State Corporation Commission, allows Washington Gas to replace eligible infrastructure on an accelerated basis to enhance safety and reliability and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The overall footprint of the pipeline replacement program includes approximately 4,600 feet of 16-inch pipeline along Arlington Boulevard from N. Fillmore Street to just north of N. Pershing Drive.

Replacement Activities:

Work is expected to begin at the end of summer 2016 and continue through fall 2017. The entire length of the new pipeline will be installed in Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) right-of-way. Project schedules are affected by weather and other circumstances outside our control, but we remain committed to completing this work as expeditiously as possible.

The construction schedule for the project are as follows:
  • Service road adjacent to Arlington Boulevard (Route 50), from N Fillmore St to west of N Bedford St – November 1st, 2016 through December 1st, 2016.
  • West of Bedford St. to Washington Boulevard - September 12th , 2016 through November 1st, 2016.
  • Arlington Boulevard Crossing to the north bound ramp from Arlington Boulevard onto Washington Boulevard – August 1st 2016 through September 2nd, 2016.
  • Along North bound ramp from Arlington Boulevard onto Washington Boulevard – Winter/Spring 2017
  • Start the drill process and installation of the pipe under N. Pershing Drive from north bound ramp to north of North Pershing Dr. – September 1st, 2016 through November 1st, 2016

Work Hours:

For all Washington Gas construction projects, we strive to limit inconvenience to the communities we serve. Accordingly, work hours are scheduled Monday through Thursday 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Any changes to the work hours will be communicated.

Night work may be necessary to install the crossings on Washington Boulevard and the Arlington Boulevard ramp.

Washington Gas will adhere to a traffic control plan agreed upon by the VDOT. One or more lane closures may be necessary along portions of the project. Parking will be prohibited on some portions of the Arlington Boulevard service road for approximately three to four weeks from the commencement on or around November 1st, 2016.

Temporary and Permanent Restoration:

While work is in progress, our crews will make temporary repairs to the roadway surfaces. Final roadway restoration will commence after all services in an area are complete and as weather allows. Washington Gas will fully comply with VDOT standards and requirements for roadway restoration. Additionally, in the event of damage to private property, a crew will be in the community to restore it to as close to pre-construction condition as possible.
