Washington Gas is replacing selected gas mains and service lines in the Marumsco Hills subdivision as part of the Steps to Advance Virginia’s Energy (SAVE) Plan. The company’s SAVE Plan, an accelerated pipe replacement program approved by the Virginia State Corporation Commission, allows Washington Gas to replace eligible infrastructure on an accelerated basis to enhance safety and reliability and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The overall footprint of the pipeline replacement program includes roughly the intersection of the Prince William Parkway and West Longview Avenue to the north, I-95 to the west, Route 1 to the east, and Opitz Boulevard to the south.
Some areas will have replacement of both the gas main in the street and the service lines to homes. The pipe replacement work will begin by mid-April 2016 and should be completed in 12 to 18 months. Project schedules are affected by weather and other circumstances outside our control, but we remain committed to completing this work as expeditiously as possible. The time needed to complete construction taking place in front of individual properties will vary, but in general should not take longer than a few days depending on conditions. If a service line is being replaced, the individual gas service will need to be temporarily interrupted while the line is being replaced. The replacement should take no longer than one day. A temporary interruption of service should also be expected in cases where the main in the street is being replaced as we change services over to the new main.
For all Washington Gas construction projects, we strive to limit inconvenience to the communities we serve. Accordingly, we have secured extended work hours through the county permitting process so we can complete this project as quickly as possible. With the exception of heavily traveled streets, including those with significant pedestrian traffic, our work may begin as early as 8 a.m. Work on heavily traveled roadways will generally be scheduled between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Temporary and Permanent Restoration:
While work is in progress, our crews will make temporary repairs to the roadway surfaces. Final roadway restoration will commence after all services in an area are complete and as weather allows. Washington Gas will fully comply with VDOT standards and requirements for roadway restoration. Additionally, in the event of damage to private property, a crew will be in the community to restore it to as close to pre-construction condition as possible.
We understand construction can have an impact on your daily routine and are pleased to provide you with several options for learning about our pipe replacement operations in your neighborhood. As we work to upgrade our distribution system, Washington Gas will provide updates to those directly and indirectly impacted by construction efforts. General information and updates regarding the project will be available here, through mailings, door hangers and the Marumsco Hills Group Page on Facebook. You also may explore our online activity map, where you can see the sites of our replacement operations on a Google-enabled map of your neighborhood.
