Medical certification

If you are a residential customer and you or a member of your household has a serious illness, relies upon life-support equipment, or has an existing condition for which a termination of gas service could be a threat to life, health, or safety, please inform us of these circumstances in advance of disconnection. To postpone termination of your service, please see the following guidelines.

  1. Please contact Washington Gas at 844-WASHGAS (844-927-4427) immediately if you are unable to pay your gas bill.
  2. Complete and submit the Medical Certification form based on your jurisdiction. This form must be certified by a licensed physician, certified nurse practitioner or physician assistant.
  3. Disconnection will be postponed for 30 days upon receipt of a Medical Certification form from a residential customer.
  4. You must either enroll in an installment plan or pay the outstanding balance during the 30-day period to avoid disconnection of your gas service.

Medical Certification Forms:

1 "Serious illness" means an illness certifiable by a licensed physician to be such that termination of service during the period of time covered by the certificate would be especially dangerous to the health of the person certified to be seriously ill.

2 “Life-support equipment" means any electric or gas energy-using device certified by a licensed physician as being essential to prevent, or to provide relief from, a serious illness or to sustain the life of the customer or an occupant of the premises.
