First, we’ll need to determine natural gas availability in your neighborhood. To get started, see if gas is available.

If your home is in proximity to our gas main pipeline, you’ll receive an immediate response. Or, if additional research is needed, you’ll receive a follow up email in three business days.

If you're looking for a contractor, try our contractor search to find a qualified, licensed, participating contractor in our network program. If you already have a contractor, contact him/her to determine the cost and feasibility of converting to natural gas equipment.

Your contractor will collect information that includes the number, type and BTU rating(s) of the gas appliance(s) you’re installing and gas pressure requirements.

Your natural gas contractor can help you fill out the service forms required to begin the conversion process. These forms are critical for us to accurately size the new service and meter.

For both market enhancement and new construction jobs, your contractor must also provide the property plat and/or dimensional sketch, including meter location.

Like all similar projects, construction costs can vary greatly. Many variables will be considered in performing the financial cost analysis of your project.

Examples of these variables could include, but may not be limited to: distance from existing gas infrastructure, potential easement requirements, site conditions, required permits, stated consumer gas equipment installations, etc.

Due to these variances, it is not possible for Washington Gas to provide an accurate up-front cost quote. Once your contractor has submitted the forms for your project, Washington Gas will evaluate your job. Once the evaluation is complete, you will receive a customer commitment letter. This letter will include a job identification number also referred to as your BCA number. Use this number to reference your job at any point during the conversion process.

Additionally, this letter will outline any costs, if applicable. Costs include installing the gas service line, meter and regulator, and would be in addition to whatever your contractor has quoted for the purchase and installation of your natural gas appliances.

Interested in financing? If you are using a participating Washington Gas network contractor, financing options are available on all natural gas appliances. Check with your chosen contractor on their offerings for assisting with conversion costs.

Because a signed customer commitment letter (and any required contribution) are needed to continue the conversion process, Washington Gas cannot take any action until you return the commitment letter and pay any installation contribution costs.

If you do not return the commitment letter immediately, the price estimate is valid for 45 days from the date on the commitment letter.

For all gas installations, Washington Gas must successfully obtain the necessary permits and easements related to your job. Once received, one of our project managers will forward it to a Washington Gas underground contractor to arrange for installation.

Our underground subcontractor will coordinate with the utility locating service to mark the public underground utilities, as required by law. You should also locate and mark any private underground utilities on your property, such as sprinkler systems, buried oil tanks or landscape lighting systems prior to service installation.

This allows Washington Gas to safely install gas lines without interfering with any other underground utility lines.

The various colored markings throughout the neighborhood are done by Miss Utility. 

Once the underground line is installed, your gas meter will be installed. Then, contact your conversion contractor to schedule installation and inspection of all the interior gas piping and appliances.

Meter Installation

After the underground line is installed, the next step in the process is to set the meter.

When underground contractor has completed installation of the meter bar, please fill out and return the Meter Set Form to contractorservices@washgas.com.

Appliance Installation

This last step includes installation of interior gas lines, equipment and local code authority inspections. Once the inspections are complete, your contractor can then connect your house line to the meter.

Your plumber or gas fitter should ensure that the meter is turned on and the appliances are operating correctly.
