Update - March 5, 2026

Washington Gas is providing the following update regarding restoration efforts in Beltsville, Md:

As of 9 a.m. today

  • Washington Gas has completed the major restoration phase of this incident.
    • Technicians have now made at least two attempts to restore service and relight appliances at each home.
    • Service has been fully restored to 92% of affected meters. Remaining customers will be assisted through normal operations.
      • Door hangers in English and Spanish have been left at each residence where we were unable to reach the occupant. Customers who need assistance should contact Washington Gas at 703-750-1000.
    • Service has been fully restored at multifamily complexes, including Maryland Farms Condominiums, Townley Apartments, Cherry Glen Condominiums, and Barclay Square Apartments.
    • As a reminder, full service restoration requires our technicians to access each home in order to relight appliances. An adult must be present to complete this process.

Update - March 4, 2026

Washington Gas is entering the final stages of restoring service to our customers in Beltsville, Md.

As of 8 p.m. today

  • Service has been safely restored to approximately 86% of affected customer meters.

As a reminder, full service restoration requires our technicians to access each home to relight appliances. An adult must be present to provide access. Our crews have been working throughout the day to complete this process.

Update - March 4, 2026

Washington Gas is providing the following update regarding restoration efforts in Beltsville, Md:

As of 12 p.m. today

  • Service has been safely restored to approximately 77% of affected customer meters.
  • Technicians are on site at various multifamily properties--including Maryland Farms Condominiums, Townley Apartments, and Barclay Square Apartments--as well as commercial and single-family homes to restore service and relight appliances.
  • Technicians have now made at least one attempt to restore service and relight appliances at each single-family home. As a reminder, full service restoration requires our technicians to access each home in order to relight appliances. An adult must be present to complete this process.

Update - March 3, 2026

Washington Gas is providing the following update regarding restoration efforts in Beltsville, Md:

As of 4 p.m. today

  • Crews continue working to restore service and relight appliances for affected customers. Service has been safely restored to approximately 55% of affected customer meters.
    • Note: In high-density buildings and complexes, a single meter may serve many individual customers. We are prioritizing restoration for meters at critical facilities—such as schools and medical facilities—as well as those that serve densely populated residential buildings and complexes.
    • The service restoration process includes individually turning meters on and then relighting appliances, such as furnaces, water heaters, and stoves.
  • Technicians are on site at various multifamily locations as well as commercial and single-family homes to restore service and relight appliances.

Already completed:

  • Service was fully restored to Riderwood Senior Living Community, High Point High School, and other critical sites.
  • The damaged service line was repaired, all safety checks were performed, and gas was safely reintroduced into the system.

Update - March 2, 2026

Washington Gas continues to work on the safe restoration of gas service to customers in Beltsville, Md., following an incident on February 27.

At this time, we’ve made significant progress and are nearing the final stages of this related work, including connecting gas service to buildings with the greatest need—including the Riderwood community, local schools and two large apartment buildings—transitioning from temporary fuel sources back to system gas and relighting the impacted area.

With full cooperation from our customers in providing access to their meters, we should be able to restore gas service to the majority of residences within the next 48–72 hours.

Update – March 1, 2026  

Washington Gas crews continue working to repair a damaged service line on Cherry Hill Road in Beltsville, Md. As a precaution, gas service to the surrounding area has been shut off while repairs and safety checks are underway. Approximately 570 customer meters are currently affected.

A temporary fuel supply has been established at the Riderwood Senior Living Community in the affected area to support their essential operations on site.  

Once repairs are completed and all safety checks are verified, we will begin restoring service to customers as quickly and safely as possible.  

We will provide updates as additional information becomes available.


Washington Gas Statement on Beltsville Incident

On February 27, 2026, Washington Gas was notified of third-party excavation work that resulted in damage to one of our four-inch service lines in Beltsville, Md. Our crew was on scene repairing that line when released gas was ignited by an unknown source, at approximately 10:15 p.m.

One employee was injured as a result of the explosion. They experienced serious, non-life-threatening injuries and are currently in stable condition.

Our immediate and ongoing priority is to protect the safety of people and the community. As a precaution, we have shut off gas service to the area while our construction crews remain on site to repair the damaged line.

We will provide updates as more information becomes available.
