If you have fallen behind on your gas bill and live in Maryland, we are here to help.
Washington Gas partners with federal programs, state-managed programs, and community organizations to connect you with the support you may need. Your first step toward receiving financial assistance is to apply for the Maryland Energy Assistance Program (MEAP). Once approved, you may qualify for additional programs listed below.
If you do not qualify for energy assistance programs, or if you’re in a position to help others in your community, additional options are available below.

Maryland Energy Assistance Program (MEAP)
MEAP helps eligible households pay their winter heating bills. Grants are based on household size, income, and the type of fuel used for heating. You may apply once per program year, which runs from July 1 through June 30.

Utility Service Protection Program (USPP)
USPP protects eligible households from utility shutoffs during the heating season. To participate, you must:
- Qualify for MEAP
- Enroll in a year-round budget billing plan
USPP helps stabilize monthly payments and ensures continuous service during the winter months. Learn more and apply for USPP
Washington Area Fuel Fund (WAFF)
WAFF provides financial assistance to eligible families in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia to help cover their natural gas heating costs. Since 1983, WAFF has distributed more than $34 million in emergency heating assistance, helping over 320,000 people across the Washington region find warmth, stability, and relief.
Energy Efficiency & Home Support
EmPOWER Low Income Energy Efficiency Program (LIEEP)
LIEEP, administered by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), provides income-eligible households with:
- A no-cost professional home energy audit
- Weatherization improvements such as weather-stripping, caulking, window coverings, and insulation
- Gas furnace tune-ups or replacement when needed
These upgrades help reduce energy costs and improve home comfort.

Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP)
WAP helps income-eligible renters and homeowners reduce energy costs and maintain safe, energy-efficient homes. Services may include:
- Insulation
- Duct sealing
- Heating and cooling system repairs or replacement
- Air sealing
- ENERGY STAR® lighting and appliance upgrades
Eligibility:
You automatically qualify if anyone in your household has received assistance in the last 12 months from SSI, TANF, or MEAP.
Priority is given to:
- Adults over 60
- Individuals with disabilities
- Households with children

Bill Management Options
If you do not qualify for the above programs, or if you still need additional support, Washington Gas offers several tools to help you manage your bill:
- Installment Payment Plan: Spread your balance over 12 months
- Budget Plan: Pay the same amount each month
- eBill for paperless billing
- AutoPay for automatic monthly payments
