Washington Area Fuel Fund Celebrates Raising $750,000 at Washington Gas ‘Party With A Purpose’
Funds will help over 1,500 national capital area residents heat their homes this winter.
WASHINGTON (Oct. 3, 2023) -- Washington Gas announced that the Washington Area Fuel Fund (WAFF) raised $750,000 since the beginning of the year at its Sept. 27 celebration, coined “Party With a Purpose.” With the National Cathedral as the backdrop, the event amassed a combination of sponsors, donors and special guests to raise funds for WAFF and celebrate Washington Gas’ 175th anniversary. Sponsors included utility partners Brothers Paving & Concrete, Centuri, CGI, EXP, InfraSource, PWC and Utilli.
“We are grateful to everyone who made our ‘Party With a Purpose’ a success,” said Blue Jenkins, President of Washington Gas. “Keeping families warm is our business, so raising this money to support so many of them is a perfect way to celebrate 175 years of serving our communities.”
The Washington Area Fuel Fund is a partnership between Washington Gas and The Salvation Army that assists families and individuals who are unable to afford their heating bills during the winter. Established in 1983, WAFF has distributed nearly $33 million to help more than 308,000 local homes keep their heat on while they get back on their feet. On average, WAFF helps between 7,000 and 8,000 families in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. A full 100% of donations go directly to support WAFF programs.
July 8 marked the 175th anniversary of President James Polk signing the bill that Congress passed to incorporate the Washington Gas Light Company, making Washington Gas the first chartered gas company in the United States. The full company name reflects why Washington Gas was established: to light the Capitol and the White House.
